Hello and welcome to #35. I have just returned from holiday and regular readers will remember that I talk a great game on holidays but suck at them. Once again I will say how amazing holidays are and that they are so key to being better at work…it’s all true. I feel for the first time since I can remember, pretty refreshed. I need to take my own advice. I am booking for August in a few weeks. I promise.
Now, on to the #content.
1. How MrBeast Learns
By doing. This feels quite similar in philosophy to a number of entrepreneurs and a book I’m reading called Venture Captial and the Art of Disruption. Basically, do it. be open minded, test, take bets and challenging what has been done before rather than accept expertise/orthodoxy. I worked at a Startup like this, turns out, some expertise are important, but that’s another story.
HT
for the link in her excellent newsletter.2. What is a Creative Director anyway?
Fashion is always a sector that I look at and try to take things from. This is a great piece on what is going on with Creative Director hires and generally what is the cause.
3. Can walking meetings lead to healthier lives?
Yes. IMO. I started doing these when I worked at a startup as the CMO, CTO and founder would routinely insist. I always found them super useful and in particular now the days are getting longer here in the UK.
4. As video games grow they are eating media
Games are a big topic at the moment. 35 years to become an overnight success.
5. How The Last of Us has plotted a new path for TV + Games
As above. I don’t disagree.
6. Twitter continues to become less useful.
I only talk about football there now which is also depressing. Shame as it was so useful for so long. Quite a good framing here, bonus link.
7. People are sleeping in VR.
Each their own, but this doesn’t feel great?
8. Bloomberg GPT
Not seen a huge amount of mentions of this but it feels like it could be a big deal.
9. Podcasts that don’t exist. 👇
Tweets & Toks.
Bonus.
Succession is back and the dialogue is superb as ever. Yellowjackets is also back in stride and I cannot wait for the last series of The Marvellous Ms Maisel.
All the spelling and grammatical mistakes in this Substack are on purpose to test you, actually. Well done. You got them all. No, I don’t need to know about them, you have that kudos.
That Donald Glover article was killer. Thanks for sharing
