Hello and welcome to #9.
I’m writing this week’s Substack on a plane. It’s a shortish flight to Stockholm (my first time there) but it has meant that I haven’t been distracted by in-flight entertainment because it’s not a long flight.
What it has meant was that I spent well over an hour thinking. No music. No podcast. No book or magazine. Phone in my pocket. Just thinking. I can’t remember the last time I just thought without stimulus. I’ve been able to consider a few things, work and personal that I’ve not had to face up to because I’m constantly finding distractions and things to do.
Begs the question, dearest reader, what comes at you when you just sit with your thoughts for a prolonged period? What are you avoiding? Big, bold start.
This week I have 6 links. Just 6? Do you prefer 6 only or more of a journey of links? Let me know, reply to this email or comment below.
Now, on to the #content.
🔗👉 $ 1. The rise of Cashapp. Great piece on an app that I don’t feel has much visibility in the UK, other than in Twitter threads that blow up. Really fascinating business and feels important.
🔗👉 🐺 2. Morbius is awful. But the internet cannot stop talking about it. Good run down here. Something I always find lolz about what goes viral, it isn’t always (ever?) what you think. The beauty of the internet madness.
🔗👉 💻 3. Metaverse is a dirty word to many, but this take *is* interesting. The Metaverse is an enterprise thing
🔗👉 📊 4. There is no such thing as Data. We bang on about data every day, but what is it, really? Is it even a thing? Slightly conceptual but in essence, context = importance.
5. Adapting to the future. Sequoia Capital’s deck to startups, but actually is really useful on change, on being ready and how to survive, thrive and keep going.
I can’t remember where I found this, sorry if it’s you and I didn’t attribute it!
6. The future of leadership is kindness. I’m kinda tired of the ‘be kind’ hashtag movement because I think it’s hollow and actually often people who say it use it in a way that is to defend. But this piece I resonated with and I agree. Coaching, guiding, empowering and supporting are the pillars I live by. Hire great people, make sure the chemistry works and do the above.
Adieu.
Almost at the 10th SubStack, time is flowing so quickly right now and going into a busy period, last week’s Substack was the 2nd most read since I started. So glad you’re coming with me.
Bonus.
Watching the Staircase on Sky Atlantic, a dramatisation of the insane Staircase murder. I’m not a true crime fan, but it’s very good and it gets a bit insane. Worth the watch.
All the spelling and grammatical mistakes in this Substack are on purpose to test you, actually. Well done. You got them all. No, I don’t need to know about then, you have that kudos.
